1. So what is an interior designer?

Interior designers do the following

  • Create blocking (and stacking with multiple floors) diagrams to confirm spatial relationships

  • Create space plans

  • Coordinate with consultants to assure a fully integrated interior design

  • Develop reflected ceiling plans working with required consultants to design and coordinate  architecture, structure, lighting, audio visual, acoustic, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, sprinklers and life safety device locations.

  • Create interior elevations

  • Select, specify and prepare purchase process for furniture and finishes

  • Select lighting and hardware

  • Design and document custom furniture and millwork

  • Work with architects to assist in construction drawing preparation

  • Work closely with contractors during construction process

In addition to having the requisite training and skills to be a licensed interior designer – the great designer is also an INVENTOR.

INVENTOR

  • Navigator-  navigates to assure smooth process

  • Visionary-  has the ability to see the possibilities

It is a multifaceted world of interior design. The skilled designer is not merely a planner of spaces and selector of furnishings. A true interior designer is an INVENTOR, weaving together the threads of creativity, vision and practicality. They are instigators of change, navigators through complex design processes, visionaries who see what many may not and economists who balance aesthetics with budget.
